Spring and summer workshops in Press Street Gardens

Join us in Press Street Gardens this April, May, and June for a series of weekly workshops, supported by Chevron. Unless otherwise noted, workshops are free and take place in the Gardens at 7 Press Street!

4/8 – Using Tools and Building a Goat Pen
Help us build a new goat pen for our expanded family, and learn to use basic tools for building and gardening! 10 am- 2pm

4/22 – Cover Cropping with Peanuts and Natural Easter Egg Dyeing (plus, our “Spring Fling” social!)
These workshops will be part of our “Spring Fling” party, one of our seasonal community garden parties, and will include a peanut boil and peanut catching contest! Garden staff will whip up plant-based egg dyes–just bring white eggs to participate for FREE and learn about the techniques we use to make dye! We’ll also be planting peanuts and learning about the process of cover cropping. Admission is free to Spring Fling. Food, drinks and goodies are available for purchase. 3pm-7pm

5/3 – Double Digging
Learn how to amend your garden soil and create good soil structure without tilling. 4pm-5:30pm

5/6 – Getting Down with City Soil
In this workshop we will talk through the challenges of dealing with urban soils including pH imbalances, low organic matter and the elephant in the room: soil contamination. Learn the process of checking you soil for safety and what to do if you’re less that thrilled with the results. 10am-11:30am

5/14 – Mother’s Day Brunch
Local flowers for sale and bouquet making workshop, with food provided by Port City Pantry and coffee by Arrow Cafe, 11am-2pm.

5/20 – Growing Tropical Plants in the Sub-Tropics
We’ll go over starting and propagating tropical fruits in New Orleans and how to overwinter them in this sub-tropical climate. 10am-11:30am

5/27 – But what does organic MEAN?
We’ll discuss the nuts and bolts of what it means for gardens to be organic and what it means for food to be organic. Participants will learn to mix organic chemicals and best practices for treating summer pests organically. 10am-11:30am

6/3 – City Chickens
This workshop is part of the Eat Local Challenge will cover the ups and downs of caring for and keeping chickens in the city. 10am-11:30am

6/10 – Starting Your Fall Seeds Right
Get the proper techniques down early so that you can sow your fall seeds seamlessly. Learn about seeding as well as transplanting and potting up. 10am-12pm
